Upgrades to the model

21.06.2025

The Sunsethue model has been upgraded, now running twice per day, and in steps of 2 hours. Besides this, a new experimental feature is soon coming to Sunsethue.

Two runs per day

The model now runs two times per day. The run at 6UTC still makes forecasts for 78h ahead. At 18UTC, a new run is introduced to update the first 28h with new data. This means that the forecasts for the same day, or one day ahead, will be updated more often for more accurate forecasts.

More timesteps

The timestep interval has been upgraded from 3h to 2h, this means that less interpolation is needed in the forecasts, which will result in more accurate forecasts. The maps are now also available at an interval of 2 hours as a result of this.

Future upgrades

Running the Sunsethue ray-based model is quite computationally expensive. That's why the the upgrades are done in an incremental way. In the future, I want to reduce the timestep inteval even further to 1 hour, run the 12z in full, and maybe even introduce intermediate runs. Lastly, the horizontal resolution can also be increased for more detailed forecasts.

Soon: new experimental feature

Over the past weeks I've been working on a new feature: a time indicator of when the best colors will occur. This experimental feature will hopefully become available over the next weeks.
