A new weather model is used as Sunsethue's data source to improve the accuracy of the forecasts.
Sunsetting GFS
The reliability of the GFS weather model proved not sufficient for the forecast accuracy Sunsethue wants to achieve. The accuracy of the forecasts have improved since the new model was deployed in September, but the full potential couldn’t be reached due to wrong weather forecasts by GFS.
Introducing ICON
That’s why I started testing around with the ICON weather model of the DWD. Forecasts of this model regarding cloud cover, especially low clouds, are much better than GFS. The algorithm has stayed the same, but has been fitted to this new model.
Measuring Accuracy
I’m currently running an internal case study to fully verify the model’s performance and tweak it where needed. A larger scale research project (with community input) is planned for next year.
